Every entrepreneur receives advice. Constantly. And from nearly everyone. Advice about:

  • Pitching to investors

  • Building an MVP

  • Pivoting

  • Scaling

Most of it is well intentioned. Some of it is genuinely useful.

But after 40 years of building companies, working with founders, and building entrepreneurial ecosystems across the country, I’ve learned something that rarely gets discussed:

Founders who build exceptional ventures don’t simply work harder. They behave differently. They engage customers more often. They test their assumptions sooner. They pay closer attention to the signals the market is sending.

And when those signals indicate opportunity or a need to change, they act.

Building a sustainable, scalable, high-performing venture isn’t a matter of luck or personality. It’s the result of disciplined action, continuous learning, and the willingness to adjust when the evidence says it’s time.

That’s what ICAN Tune Up is all about.

Each issue will explore an idea, a company, a technology, a conversation, or an observation that reveals how high-performing founders behave.

The goal is to help you notice what matters, act deliberately, and build a venture that gets stronger with every interaction.

Because evidence-driven action builds high-performing ventures.

Welcome aboard.

KPI INSIGHT: PROBLEM VALIDATION

One of the most common mistakes I see founders make is confusing belief with evidence.

When I ask whether they’ve validated the problem they’re solving, the answer is almost always, “Yes.”

My next question is a little different.

Would your customer pay to make this problem go away today, at the price you’ll eventually need to charge?

That question usually changes the conversation. If the answer is supported by customer interviews, Letters of Intent, pilot projects, pre-orders, or other objective evidence, you’re making real progress.

If the answer begins with, “I think...” or “We believe...” then your next action isn’t building more product, it’s gathering more evidence. Here’s a simple challenge for this week:

What is one piece of objective evidence you could collect over the next seven days that would convince a complete stranger your customer truly has this problem?

If you can’t answer that question yet, you’ve probably found your highest-priority activity for the week.

LISTEN: WHY SHOULD I INVEST?

Every week I sit down with a founder and ask the only question that matters: why should anyone put money into this? Listen to the latest episodes here.

If you got a story worth telling, I'm always looking for founders to interview. Reach out here.
