Dr. D’s Thoughts

Introducing the ICAN Proving Grounds!

From Polishing the Pitch to Engineering Performance

Over the past three weeks, I’ve written about the three dimensions of venture performance: Market Readiness, Economic Readiness, and Capital Readiness. Today, I’m excited to announce that we’re bringing these ideas to life with the launch of the ICAN Proving Grounds!

The Proving Grounds represents the culmination of more than four decades of experience as an entrepreneur, investor, educator, and researcher. It reflects a conviction I’ve developed over those years: Great ventures aren’t built by perfecting the pitch. They’re built by engineering performance.

Our inspiration comes from the world of Formula One racing, where extraordinary performance is never taken for granted. Throughout a racing season, teams continually test, measure, calibrate, and re-engineer their cars and operating systems in pursuit of even the smallest competitive advantage. Performance is never a destination. It’s an ongoing process of learning, adaptation, and improvement.

We’re bringing that same performance engineering mentality to venture building.

We’ve designed an intensive, immersive eight-week experience for what we call ventures in motion, particularly Campus-Born Ventures translating breakthrough technologies and intellectual innovations into commercial enterprises.

At its core, the Proving Grounds is about making the transition from startup to enterprise. Founders learn to move beyond the improvisation and experimentation of startup life toward the systematic leadership, organizational capabilities, and operating disciplines required for sustained enterprise performance.

Our proprietary Performance Dashboard tracks 18 key performance indicators across the three readiness dimensions, providing continuous feedback as founders develop, test, and calibrate their enterprise capabilities. The objective is to establish a cadence of high performance that continues long after the eight-week experience concludes.

And here’s what makes the Proving Grounds different: We’re not preparing ventures to raise capital. We’re preparing them to perform.

Some founders may discover that their best strategy is to build efficient revenue and operating engines, preserve equity, and pursue outside capital only when it can accelerate demonstrated performance.

Our ambition is straightforward. Help promising founders become exceptional enterprise builders.

The ICAN Proving Grounds is where promising ventures become high-performing enterprises.

And I couldn’t be more excited to get started!

KPI Insight: The Performance Calibration Advantage

What gets measured can be improved. What gets continuously calibrated becomes a competitive advantage.

Formula One teams don't wait until the end of a racing season to evaluate performance. They continuously collect data, identify weaknesses, test improvements, and recalibrate their systems to gain a competitive edge.

High-performing ventures operate the same way.

The transition from startup to enterprise requires founders to move beyond intuition and reactive decision-making toward systematic performance management. That means identifying the indicators that matter, gathering credible evidence, and continually adjusting the systems that drive results.

The KPI Insight: A performance dashboard is only as valuable as the decisions and improvements it produces. The objective isn't simply to track performance. It's to build an enterprise that continuously learns how to perform better.

Dr. D's Challenge: Identify one performance indicator in your venture that isn't meeting expectations. What underlying capability needs to improve, and what specific action will you take this week to recalibrate it?

A free live session with Dr. D

Thursday, October 22
12:00 pm Central, on Zoom

You just read why we built the Proving Grounds. On Thursday, I’ll show you why capital follows performance, and how to measure yours week by week.

I'll open with six signs that a founder is pitching more than performing. Count how many describe you. Then I'll walk through the three readiness dimensions, explain what the Performance Dashboard measures, and show how the eight-week experience runs. I'll close with who the founding cohort is for and what it asks of you, and take your questions live.

The founding cohort has 12 seats. Applications close December 15.

Can't make Thursday at noon? Register anyway. We'll send you the recording.

See you next Tuesday.
